Summary

What might work and education look like in a world shaped by artificial intelligence? In the first Education Lounge podcast, we explore automation, economic change and the human qualities that technology might struggle to replace.

The conversation moves from future careers to online teaching, empathy and access to education. It asks whether making a system more efficient necessarily makes it better for the people using it.

Key Takeaways

Career choices sit within a changing world
The discussion questions how children can think about future work when technology is changing the work itself.

Efficiency is only part of the picture
A faster or cheaper system does not automatically offer a better human experience.

Human interaction matters in education
Gestures, responsiveness and relationships are part of teaching, alongside the information being delivered.

Online access has practical limits
Digital learning depends on access to suitable technology as well as engaging teaching.

Keep asking what education is for
Preparing for the future means considering judgement, empathy and participation, not simply predicting the next job title.

Show Notes and References

The opening episode introduces questions about work, technology and education that later return in the discussion of the metaverse.

Automation and the changing economy

[unclear] so actually what we see is surveillance great surveillance is becoming more and more necessary in increasing the capital as well yeah I mean that’s all that’s already started isn’t it Yeah but it’s I think it’s it’s it’s on the tipping point yeah definitely yeah um [unclear] [unclear] um yeah yeah yeah before you agree with that

Empathy and human experience

One what else does a human get out aside from empathy and sympathy and stuff like it wouldn’t take any of that stuff into Calculation it could it could no no Which is completely just a copy but without all of that emotion and it was to run exactly the same to an outside observer to an alien who’s watching it they look exactly the same yeah but to us

Living actually in that world you tell you can tell don’t matter like what we think about it it would just be the way it is that’s the scary thing about it because You can’t actually be the people of the people won’t matter I mean that’s just that’s even more scary yes

Efficiency, value and profit

Like it’s already started and they’re being like you take away [unclear] from the u.s about 50 of their economy as you as capitalism becomes more efficient how do you generate profit how how do You say something about value it needs to have work done through it and then without a work done for it if you become increasingly increasingly efficient you notice how things go down in price that’s not a good thing But that’s not a good thing for how capitalism works it essentially means like you can’t create profit you can’t make profit harder to make profit

Again we’re seeing we’re seeing that already as well

What should I be when I grow up?

Uh yeah unless unless you’re within that company so [unclear] what do you want to be you know or what should I be a robot Yeah because you need to be like that’s such a fraction of the population Those sorts of people well at the end of the day that’s going to be or you’d be becoming you become the owner of the capital which means like you need to own company but you need to own companies on

That wave otherwise you you can’t you you own nothing yeah I mean yeah there are opportunities for those People it’s worth it but you kind of need to be able to predict what’s going to happen like at some point if it’s unsustainable that’s that’s the main thing is it will adjust itself But there’s only so much you can in a consumer society where everyone’s consuming all the time and yet unable to [unclear] enough to continue it won’t work and that’s just [unclear] and has to make money yeah yeah

And that becomes the only way to exist in their society otherwise people just die weird it’s going to be a really strange

Efficiency versus humanity in education

World but not necessarily a good world even if it becomes in incredibly more efficient and stuff it doesn’t mean that it will be better take your education like education can Become more efficient but it all loses humanity like sure you can you can make education right there’s a lot of inefficiency and actually tuition is one of those Examples of where you it’s actually it’s very efficient in terms of time but in terms of resources it’s not but if you’re only looking like

[unclear] AI it may be a lot more it may not be good for this I think we’re seeing that already because even right now so many people have been they like they’ve said they prefer face to face

Online teaching and human interaction

Rather than going online and and bear in mind online with us right now is still with a tutor still with a human Unless somehow you can make that extremely visceral so you increase interactivity like it is almost [unclear] yeah like she does not respond Quite noticeably and I think it’s to do with like seeing the interaction with the teacher so like actually experiencing the hand movements and gestures

And there’s there’s real limits to how you do that in online

Virtual reality and access to education

[unclear] I mean VR that’s the way it’s going to happen um but how do you make that accessible but I think you think about it this way like one of the biggest problems is like india or So thanks to this crisis and thanks to lockdowns basically most a lot of children are out of school like [unclear] the education system they’ve gone back to work and that education is really How you get out of that situation and continuing is really important yeah so yeah I’m going to integrate some of those in some places right

Yeah I think that’s like like where is education going is something that we need to think
